Blackjack Math: The Science Behind Basic Strategy


If you walk through a casino floor and observe the Blackjack tables, you will witness a massive amount of terrible decision-making.

Every single possible combination of your two cards versus the dealer's single "upcard" has been run through computer simulations millions of times.

If you play Blackjack without perfectly adhering to Basic Strategy, you are voluntarily surrendering a massive, unnecessary percentage of your money to the casino.

Let's debunk the myths of bad players "ruining" the table and explain the profound importance of the dealer's upcard.
The Foundation: The Dominance of the 10-Value Card
In a standard deck, there are four cards of every numerical value (e.g., four 5s, four 8s).

This means that nearly one-third (30.7%) of the entire deck consists of cards valued at exactly 10.

For example, if the dealer's upcard is a 6, you must mathematically assume their hidden card is a 10, giving them a hidden total of 16.
